Qué se puede hacer un viernes al sur de Londres?

Lejos de las áreas más concurridas por el turismo y ubicado en Camberwell, zona rara vez explorada por los visitantes de la ciudad, se encuentra un espacio que ofrece una atmósfera que inspira las notas del jazz.

Con antecedentes desde 1806 y reconstruida en su totalidad en el año 1844, St Giles Church alberga en su cripta JAZZLIVE, lugar que promueve el gusto por el jazz al hacer las noches de los viernes, veladas realmente placenteras.

Para conocedores y no conocedores del jazz la mesa está puesta!

Menú: ambiente internacional afable, no pretencioso, con buena comida y oferta de bebidas a precios rara vez encontrados en Londres (incluso hay descuento de estudiante en la entrada).

An exemplary lifestyle

It has been a long time since I wrote for the last time, but it is always a good time to start again! And what better occasion to do it than remembering a beautiful true story I heard not so long ago in a radio station from Mexico City, and which motivated me to read and learn more about a fantastic indigenous community in Mexico, the Tojolabal Community.

Roots
The Tojolabales are a subgroup of the Mayans and they name themselves Tojolwinik’otik (legitimate men) which comes from the language they speak, the Tojolabal, which derives from the roots tojol (legitimate) and ab’al (word).

Location
The Tojolabales live in the state of Chiapas, mainly in the municipality of Las Margaritas, although there are various important settlements in Altamirano, Comitán, Independencia and La Trinitaria.

View of the Origin of the Universe and Religion
The universe is conceived on three levels:
- Satk’inal or ‘sky’
- Lumk’inal or ‘earth’
- K’ik’inal or ‘infra world’

Each is inhabited by beings whose actions may influence the harmony at the community or the individual level. Throughout his life, the native seeks to maintain the equilibrium between the different forces that integrate the universe. One of the ways in which he or she can do so is throughout the observance of the traditional rituals, such as the communitarian festival named Ta’an k’oy. The teachings of tradition and religion maintain that the abandonment of the rituals and customs may cause a disorder in the individual and the community.

An exemplary lifestyle …
The Tojolabales seek the overall equilibrium, thus the actions of every individual affect the community as a whole. However, in the Tojolabal language, there are no concepts of ‘evil’, ‘war’ or ‘enemy’, instead the prosperity of the community depends upon friendship and cooperation.

‘…the world is not here for our disposal. Opposite to this, everything lives, everything has a heart and it is our responsibility to learn how to coexist with this living world and to be respectful of it’ (Lenkersdorf 2004)

The question that remains: Why not trying to live in the Tojolabal style?

Me han recordado a un gran personaje
me alegra que les haya agradado
me llegan memorias de grandes etapas.

Fue a principios de la preparatoria,
cuando por primera vez conocí su obra
fue a mediados de la preparatoria,
al tiempo que saliera por primera vez de casa de mis padres,
cuando conociera primavera con una esquina rota.

y por la cual adoptara a Benedetti,
como mi gran amigo.

Amigo que va conmigo
en la alegría,
en la compañía,
en la soledad,
en la tristeza,
en el alma.

Fue en el 2002
cuando recién había publicado ‘Insomnios y Duermevelas’
aquella firma de autógrafos en la 18 de Julio
luego de un largo día de trabajo
corriendo por alcanzar la firma
y sí
fui el último
el último que consiguió la firma del libro en aquella ocasión
mi amigo no sólo firmó
platicó en breve,
me dio un abrazo
y dejó ver unas lágrimas.

Es una de las mejores experiencias que he tenido
uno de los mejores personajes que he conocido
y una de las más bellas imágenes que tengo
una que me llena de memorias,
todas maravillosas
de esa maravillosa República
pequeña en extensión
y grande en corazón.

hoy veo en las noticias
que a tus ochenta y siete años, luchas por tu salud

Algunas bondades de la globalización

'Globalization may be thought of initially as a widening, deepening and speeding up of world-wide interconnectedness in all aspects of social life, from the cultural to the criminal, the financial to the spiritual.' (Held et al.)

Dejé el espacio por algunos días pues había que estudiar, pero uno de estos fines de semana en que el estudio se quedó en casa, me permitió reflexionar que algunas de las bondades de la globalización son:

Presentar un mismo examen de admisión o llenar la misma solicitud que otros 450 estudiantes de cualquier país que puedas imaginar

Estudiar en una institución donde están representados más de 160 países

Tener a uno de tus familiares o amigos más queridos de tu lugar de origen, visitándote del otro lado del Atlántico

Viajar juntos en un tren que conecta dos países por debajo del agua (idea de Napoleón desde 1802 y que se concretara hasta 1994)

Pasar una velada maravillosa en el Pont des Arts en el Río Sena (puente que desde 1803 ha sido testigo de cantos, bailes, besos, llantos, risas, etc. de personas posiblemente de todas las nacionalidades del mundo), encontrándote con amigas y haciendo nuevos amigos y amigas Canadienses, Suizos, Franceses, rodeado de muchas más personas de cualquier nacionalidad y escuchando al menos otros cinco idiomas distintos a tu lengua madre, bebiendo vino Francés, comiendo fresas Españolas y gozando todo el grupo de la música que expresan las cuerdas de una guitarra que complace con las notas de una canción Peruana, Mexicana, Portuguesa, Israelí, … cualquiera que haga felices las almas de los presentes y los ausentes, pues los últimos son recordados con la música

Poder expresarte en un medio donde te puedan leer en cualquier parte del mundo, por intención o por casualidad – a todos gracias por sus comentarios – y poder compartirles algunas anécdotas

Peace Day

I was wondering that if there are days to celebrate almost anything we can imagine, there must be a Peace Day. But shouldn't this be celebrated every day? In the end one of the needs all humans have is the peace in our hearts.
Paz, peace, shalom, paix, pace, .... you know the word in any other language?
Anytime is a good time to share with someone a message of peace!

Why 'Viejo World'?

Inspired by Marley’s words ... ‘Say something!’ I decided to create this blog open to everyone, since all of us have something to say, from backpackers, to businesswomen, rockers, Rastafaris and so on.

As mentioned in the description of the blog, I consider travelling as one of the most wonderful experiences, but even better is having the opportunity to meet people from different cultures, not only to learn and enrich ourselves culturally but to appreciate our roots and see the world through other peoples’ eyes. It is always interesting to have more elements to understand other people's views on a same issue, listen to the different arguments for or against, and finally cultivate our minds. Although some of my greatest interests are IPE (international political economy) related, we meet interesting people in our daily lives, thus this might rather be an open space to share experiences from meeting interesting people around the world and to comment on interesting international contemporary issues.

I chose the name ‘Viejo World’ both because of currently living in the Old (Viejo) World, and because it reminds me how we call each other with my closest friends in Mexico, where I am originally from. ‘Viejo’ is another way to call your friends as ‘brother’.

I am surprised about how many people speak and like the Spanish language, thus I would sometimes write in Spanish, after all I love my mother tongue and I’m orgulloso de ser Mexicano!
